Meet Susan and Matt...

Susan is 42 and works full time for a local furniture manufacturer. She is married to Matt who is temporarily unemployed and has 3 children who no longer live at home.

How much does Susan drink every week?
Susan and Matt buy a staggering 3 bottles of wine 5 times a week. That’s a grand total of 135 units a week between them.

"Matt drinks faster than me so I suppose I have a third of the bottle and he has two thirds."
Susan drinks approximately 45 units a week that’s over 3 times the recommended limit for women.
Matt drinks approximately 90 units a week that’s over 4 times the recommended limit for men.

Are Susan and Matt over the recommended levels?
In a nutshell, yes! Although they have two alcohol free nights, they binge drink on the other five.

Problems they have recently had
Susan has felt no ill affects, however that doesn’t mean that there is no damage. Her drink intake has risen steadily over the years and Matt’s liver test has convinced her that her liver is fine too. Alcohol affects much more than the liver, it affects the heart, the brain and every single organ in the body.

What are they going to do?
"We’re going to cut down and see if we feel the benefit, I know we will financially as we spend £50 a week on wine which we can ill afford. We’ll try to just buy 1 bottle of good wine rather than 3 and see how it goes."

They seriously need to slow down on the booze, check their joint progress over the next few months...

Susan and Matts profile

NAME: Susan

AGE: 42

WORK/EDUCATION: Works full time for a local furniture manufacturer.

STATUS: Married to Matt who is temporarily unemployed and has 3 children who no longer live at home.

"I drink more than I used to, that’s a fact. It’s so cheap in the supermarket and we can’t afford not to take advantage of some of the offers. It’s a false economy though because if we buy 3 bottles of wine for £10, we’ll drink them all!"
"It’s easy to get in a rut, wrong word, I think I mean habit. I don’t feel ill ever and Matt my husband has just had a liver test and it came back fine. We have two booze free nights, that makes up for it doesn’t it?"
